CSL subsidiary granted first Wimax Spectrum Licence

Computer Services Limited (CSL), Samoa’s leading information technology company, today announced its subsidiary, Wimax Samoa Limited (WSL), has been granted the first Wimax Spectrum Licence in the country by the Office of the Regulator.  The licence allows Wimax Samoa Limited to provide Wimax wireless broadband internet services in the country. 

 

According to CSL CEO, Laeimau Oketevi Tanuvasa-Savea, ‘the licence represents another milestone in the companys history which will greatly benefit consumers and businesses’.  Laeimau thanked the Office of the Regulator for its approval and added that ‘Samoa can now take its place among countries which have opened its doors to the innovative technology’.

 

Wimax, the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a next generation technology, which is set to replace older standards and continue to drive the move towards a wireless world.  It uses radio waves to deliver secure, high-speed broadband wireless internet.  Sometimes known as ‘wireless DSL’ and ‘Wi-Fi on steroids’ because of faster speed and wider coverage, Wimax can connect remote locations where there are no telephone lines and cables.  The revolutionary technology is strongly positioned as the answer to emerging countrys restricted and slower dialup and ADSL broadband access.  Wimax is so promising it has Intel, the worlds premier manufacturer of computer chips, as its driving force.  The chip-maker is developing small Wimax chips for laptops and mobile phones, to ensure users stay connected while on the move.

 

With successful deployments around the world including many Pacific countries, WSL plans to roll out its high-speed internet solution together with affordable price plans, to existing CSL customers in late January 2008.
